Salvatore Ferragamo's words, “Nature heals every wound when she is given her freedom”, guide the concept of the Back to Earth capsule collection. Already in the 1940s, the Founder explored innovative, recycled and naturally sourced materials such as straw, cork and hemp, anticipating the dialogue between fashion and sustainability.
Ferragamo celebrates the regenerative beauty of our planet with a collection of Ready-to-Wear and accessories that prioritizes materials of natural origin and Made in Italy. The result, based on the harmony between ethics and aesthetics, between function and form, is a women's and men's collection that combines design and craftsmanship, reaffirming Ferragamo's commitment to a more conscious and respectful luxury.
The conceptual reflection undertaken by Ferragamo with the Sustainable Thinking exhibition in 2018 now reaches maturity with the Back to Earth capsule. It is not just a collection, but an emotional and sensorial journey into materials, colors and the Italian territory, all so dear to Ferragamo. An example of living legacy, as the Founder's creative heritage continues to inspire the choices of the present.
During the autarkic period, when the shortage of noble raw materials such as leather imposed alternative solutions upon creators, Salvatore Ferragamo experimented with the use of natural and innovative materials, transforming necessity into an opportunity for research and creativity. An intuition that not only defined his style but also anticipated a responsible and progressive approach to fashion.
The RTW is made from cotton and silk, the accessories from vegetable-tanned leather. The fabrics are treated with innovative dyes and prints, obtained through the use of mineral powders such as marble, natural earth pigments and vegetable charcoal. Notably, cotton comes entirely from Italian supply chains, with cultivations in Apulia and Sicily.
The capsule also offers a model of the iconic Ferragamo ballerina, combining a vegetable-tanned leather upper and a natural rubber sole. Lastly, a reinterpretation of the Hug bag, conceived on the occasion of the first Ferragamo Circularity Hackathon, an initiative when the brand called on the creativity of 60 of its youngest talents to reimagine its most iconic products from a circular perspective.
The limited-edition Hug is made of leather from an entirely Italian supply chain, vegetable-tanned and processed in factories that respect the highest LWG Gold certified environmental and social standards. The leather components from the bag's openwork are enhanced to create floral charms, while the reversible, removable and interchangeable inner pouch is made of silk with a cotton lining, both certified organic.
Inspired by the historic Kimo sandal, created by Salvatore Ferragamo in 1951, the design of this bag evokes the idea of versatility and customization. Similarly to how the Kimo was sold with interchangeable socks catering to different occasions, the Hug transforms and adapts to the wearer.
‘Back to Earth is our first capsule dedicated to Earth. Inspired by the harmony between man and nature, we have fused innovation and heritage, beauty and function, leading a sincere dialogue towards a fashion closer to the wellbeing of people and the Earth that hosts us.’ - James Ferragamo.
The collection will be available from 22 April 2025, on World Earth Day, on Ferragamo’s website and in an exclusive selection of 26 boutiques in Italy, France, the UK, the US, Mexico, Brazil, Japan, China, Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan and the UAE.
The dedicated packaging reflects the brand's values and the essence of the collection, utilizing paper from responsibly managed and fully recycled forests, recycled cotton and wood, demonstrating how luxury and responsibility can be intrinsically linked.
